1855
Money for Military Road
In 1855, th Federal Government appropriated money for a military road to cut through the forests from steilacoom to Bellingham.

1860
Squatter's claim to the site of Snohomish
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1860 there were rumors of construction of a military road between Fort Steilcoom and Bellingham. Quick to realize the potential of a strategic location, E.C. Ferguson made a squatter's claim to the site of Snohomish where the Pilchuck River joins the Snohomish River.

1868
E.C. Ferguson gets married
In 1868 Ferguson married Lucetia Morgan of Olympia, the daughter of a prominent pioneer. They raised three children: Sylvia, Ivy, and Cecil Emery.
